Houses make way for Bendigo's new hospital

Friday, 26 February 2010

The demolition job on houses in Mercy Street has started to make way for Bendigo's new hospital.

The Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan, and Member for Bendigo West, Bob Cameron said this marked a significant step forward for Bendigo's new hospital.

"The Brumby Labor Government committed $55 million in last May's State Budget to enable works to start on the first stage of the new Hospital," Mr Cameron said.

"To start work on the new hospital, a number of houses in Mercy Street needed to be demolished."

Work on the new hospital is a major boost for jobs in Bendigo. Local Bendigo firm, Accurate Demolition has won the demolition contract and will be employing between 6-10 workers on the site at any one time,". Ms Allan said.

"Accurate Demolition will also recycle many of the products, such as bricks and window frames, from the demolition site."

The demolition works are part of the $55 million committed in last May's Budget for Stage One of the new hospital.

"Labor was the only party at the 2006 election to commit to the process to build a new hospital for Bendigo and Labor is the only party to have made a funding commitment to building a new Hosptial for Bendigo," Ms Allan said.

The Brumby Government today also announced a funding boost to Bendigo Hospital for new state-of-the-art medical equipment.

"Bendigo Hospital will receive $177,243 for nine defribulators and an upgraded telemetry monitoring system," Ms Allan said.

"This is part of a $9.4 million boost for 41 regional and rural health services across the State."

"The Labor Government has provided significant additional funds to the Bendigo Hospital that has enabled it to employ an extra 284 nurses since 1999," Mr Cameron said.
