Premier opens new Frank McCaig Stand at the Tom Flood Sports Centre
Sunday, 7 March 2010
The Premier John Brumby today opened a new stand at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, named in honour of Bendigo cycling star, the late Frank McCaig.
Mr Brumby said Mr McCaig was a sporting champion who had left a legacy in Bendigo both on and off the cycling track.
"I am delighted to join with so many from the Bendigo community for this significant occasion," Mr Brumby said.
"Frank McCaig left a lasting legacy in a sport and city he devoted so much to. It is fitting that this fantastic new stand is named in his honour.
"Frank achieved many firsts - he was the first to be a dual winner of The Advertiser Sports Star, the first Bendigo cyclist to win the Golden Mile Wheelrace and the first to win his hometown classic three times.
"He was instrumental in the Bendigo International Madison which is one of our state's most renowned cycling events.
"This new stand will further cement the Tom Flood Sports Centre as a premiere sports centre and provides a fitting tribute to a local sporting and community hero who gave so much to the sport and so much to his community."
Frank McCaig, who made a significant lifetime contribution to the development of cycling in Bendigo, passed away in 2009.
Mr Brumby was joined by Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Bob Cameron and many in the Bendigo community for the official opening of the new Frank McCaig stand.
Ms Allan said the Frank McCaig stand would be a legacy for the Bendigo community.
"Frank gave so much to this community it is a fitting tribute that this stand will now carry his name so that many in the community can learn about his life, achievements and contribution to Bendigo," Ms Allan said.
Mr Cameron said Frank McCaig's cycling achievements would continue to be celebrated across Australia and the new stand was an important part of ensuring his legacy lived on.
"Today is a significant occasion for the Bendigo community and I congratulate all who have been involved in this fantastic project," Mr Cameron said.
The Victorian Government contributed $1.5 million towards the $2.5 million project with the City of Greater Bendigo contributing $1 million.
