Bendigo Hospital Community Page

Bendigo Hospital is one of our region's great assets. It is one of the largest regional providers of health services in Victoria, treating over 30,000 patients per year and receiving over 43,000 emergency presentations. The Bendigo Hospital is a vibrant service and crucial to this region's well-being. Bendigo is one of Australia's fastest growing regional cities, so demand on Bendigo's health services is set to grow. In 2007-08 Bendigo's emergency department saw more than an 11% increase in presentations and saw delivery of 1130 babies. For these reasons the hospital is undergoing plans for a redevelopment, and as part of this process I am keen for you to tell me your thoughts on the hospital's redevelopment plans, because we need to plan now for the future.

In 2006 the Labor Goverment made an election commitment to plan for a redevelopment of Bendigo's hospital. The process of rebuilding a hospital is, of course, complex and will take time. If it isn't done properly then we will lose the chance to get it right for decades to come. This makes community consultation crucial to ensuring that Bendigo's new hospital builds on and improves the provision of life-saving health services for many years to come.

Over the past nine years the Labor Government has made major investments in Bendigo's health services, with improvements to the emergency area, extra beds and facilities, new medical equipment and increases in operational funding, provision of the Air Ambulance Service, new radiotherapy and MRI services, and we have provided funding to Bendigo Health that has seen an additional 243 nurses employed. This is in addition to the announcement in last year's Victorian State Budget of $9.5 million for a new Emergency Department.

The process of redeveloping the site as a whole has started. The Government has already announced that there are two sites under consideration - the present hospital site and the Anne Caudle Centre site.

As part of this process I am keen to hear directly from you your comments, ideas or suggestions on the development of the new hospital. Your views are important and I welcome your feedback.
